W like Well

„Nonsense, what a nonsense", Mr. Mümmelmann disagrees, „that can't be true." „Honestly", Lili Graumaus protests, „Uncle Rudi said there's sugar water springing from the well below his storage building." „Your uncle Rudi is crazy", Mr Mümmelmann disputes. Lili Graumaus glares at him furiously: „Then go have a look for yourself. You're just afraid of climbing down there. You're a coward." Angrily, Mr Mümmelmann wrinkles his nose. He's not going to take this. That's why he's working up all his courage and says firmly: „Come on, let's go to uncle Rudi's well."

Lili's uncle lives just over the bridge in a huge dark storehouse. When Lili Graumaus, Mr. Mümmelmann, Mrs. Gans and Kosmo and Klax arrive at the hall, the swift little male mouse comes running. „Follow me", he shouts and scurries ahead proudly. The friends stumble behind him. Abruptly, Uncle Rudi Stopps in front of a hole in the ground. „We have to get through here", he explains. After looking into the narrow, dark passage, Mrs Gans declines. „I give up voluntarily." The others, too, feel a little uncomfortable. But they don't want to chicken out and slide after Rudi into the deep. For quite some time, they all slide and crawl silently one after the other. „How far is it?", Klax whines. „That's a torture", Mr Mümmelmann complains with a crimson face. „Don't worry. We'll arrive shortly", Uncle Rudi, who crawls ahead joyously, soothes them. And he didn't promise too much. After the next turn, the passage opens to show a rotund cave. Clear water is springing from a rock face. Silently, it gurgles to the ground and trickles away into the ground."My well", Uncle Rudi squeaks excitedly like a young mouse. Immediately, he sticks his little nose into the spring water and whispers enthusiastically:"Oh, this is the best water I have ever tasted. So sweet, so delightful. That's sugar water in ist purest form. While Uncle Rudi talks without drawing a breath, the friends try the alleged sugar water, one after the other. „I think it tastes like ordinary water", Klax whispers in his friend Kosmo's ear. Kosmo nods consentingly. The others think the same. Only Uncle Rudi's enthusiasm can't be stopped. „So?", he asks glowingly, „how do you like the sugar water?" Embarrassed, the friends look to the ground. No one really dares to disagree with Uncle Rudi. Finally, Lili Graumaus says cautiously: „It does taste pretty good. But I think, dear Uncle, it's more jabber water than sugar water."

The group of friends consists of a squirrel ("Kosmo"), a little red ball ("Klax"), a beaver, a goose, a mouse, a rabbit and many more - they all hang around at the playground and in the small forest. Each of their little adventures, where they plan a picknick, have to get rid of a catchy tune, help the mole or search the sugarwater well is subordinated to one letter. Unintrusively but effectively, for example the story "O like Opera" includes a lot of "o" words. For young listeners, they are just 26 funny stories, which acquaint them cleverly with the phonemes and the phonetic system of our alphabet. Lively and freshly read by the author and Annette Frier, who recently received the Bavarian TV Award.

It works. Again and again. The small format literature. Short texts for reading, which show the youngest listeners that the efforts of learning to read will soon pay off. And which awakens a desire for longer stories: the diving into fantasy worlds, over days, over weeks. Kosmo & Klax, the squirrel and the talking ball by Alexandra Helmig (...) experience alphabet stories with ants, blueberries and cousins; activity cards animate the kids to seed cress letters or form shadow letters with their hands.
